Choose your applications and adjust their usage. The calculator estimates resource needs with a reserve, highlights potential bottlenecks and compares suitable Netcup VPS and root servers. You can also enter your own resource estimates.

How your requirements are calculated

The application profiles are editorial planning estimates, not benchmarks. They provide a starting point for comparing sizes. Actual requirements depend on software versions, plugins, data volumes and concurrent usage, among other factors. Validate the result with measurements from your application before production use.

  • Operating system: Each server includes a single allowance of 1 GB RAM, 0.5 CPU cores and 12 GB storage for a lean Linux system.
  • RAM: Operating system + RAM for every selected service + your custom RAM amount. The selected reserve applies to this sum: RAM × (1 + reserve / 100).
  • CPU: Everyday mode counts the largest individual service instance in full. Additional instances of that service and other services count at 50% of their CPU value. Simultaneous peak mode counts every instance at 100%. Operating system needs and your custom CPU amount are added, followed by the selected reserve. This models concurrency; it does not promise a particular level of processing performance.
  • Server storage: (operating system + applications + custom amount + user data) × (1 + growth / 100). User data includes files, photos and emails. Allow for extra data such as thumbnails when entering your estimate.
  • Backups: Storage for external full copies is shown separately: (applications + custom amount + user data) × (1 + growth / 100) × copies, rounded up to whole GB. The operating system is excluded. Compression and deduplication are not assumed; add backup costs to your budget.

CPU cores are not directly comparable across processors, shared VPS cores and dedicated root server cores. Sustained workloads, games and other latency-sensitive services especially need practical testing. Network, I/O and required features can also limit your choice.

Which plans and costs are compared?

The comparison covers only eight regular Netcup plans: VPS 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 G12.5, plus RS 1000, 2000, 4000 and 8000 G12.5. This is not a complete market comparison or a claim to identify the cheapest provider. Smaller plans, other generations, ARM, storage, managed and dedicated server offers are outside this catalogue. Hardware data checked on October 13, 2026.

Regular prices were checked on October 13, 2026. They include German 19% VAT and IPv4 plus IPv6 at “No preference, Europe”. The 1-, 12- and 24-month terms each have their own prices. Discount offers are linked separately; coupons and free months are not deducted from regular calculator prices. Your country of residence can affect the applicable VAT.

Costs for 12 and 24 months of use are planning amounts at an unchanged price: monthly base price × months of use + one-time setup, plus your recurring extras. The minimum commitment follows the selected minimum contract term. Advance billing follows the billing period. A twelve-month usage estimate can therefore be smaller than the commitment for a 24-month contract. The checkout and contract documents are authoritative.

Our cost guide explains contract terms, billing and coupons in detail. If you want someone else to maintain the system, read the comparison of web hosting, VPS, root servers and Managed Private Servers.
